FREE Intro to Node.js and Basic Deployment

Used by companies like GoDaddy, Groupon, IBM, LinkedIn, Microsoft, Netflix, PayPal, Walmart, and Yahoo, Node.js is a very powerful JavaScript-based framework/platform. It is used to develop I/O intensive web applications like video streaming sites, single-page applications, and other web applications – it is open source and practiced by thousands of developers around the world. Run by the New York Code + Design Academy, Philly Campus, and hosted by Zivtech at their new space at One South Broad, this workshop will introduce students to introductory concepts of Node.js. Students will work individually and in groups to build a basic web server. They will learn about making API calls to a specific open sourced data repo and feed that data to their apps. Alongside a partnership/co-sponsorship with Linode, we will discuss deployment options to deploy simple node applications. Beginners are welcome! Attendees should be familiar with reading Javascript code – if you are rusty on Javascript, please complete this free tutorial on Codecademy prior to coming to the workshop (https://www.codecademy.com/learn/javascript). He graduated from Brandeis University with a bachelor’s in Computer Science and Neuroscience. Jon has worked as a Java developer and web developer, constructing components for corporate sites and enterprises. In his free time, Jon enjoys playing piano and guitar, film and photography, and long bike rides in the jungle.
